CDI @PersistenceContext not working when DAO/Bean in own Jar (GFv3)

Dominik Dorn
Hi,

I've created a small servlet/jax-rs service and tried to inject my
dao's which where in another jar. Injecting of the DAOs worked,
however their EntityManager ( annotated through
@PersistenceContext("nameOfThePU") )
was not injected.

When I copied the DAOs to the same project, the injection works
without a problem.

I think thats a bug... anyone else experienced this behavior?

kind regards,
dominik

Few weeks ago, here was a topic:

Does it cover your case?

It is not clear from your post how you are packaging your app. Do you
have an ear file containing the war and the dao jar or you deploy the
war and jar separately. More over, what is in your dao jar? Is it an EJB
jar or a jar with some entities in it?

Re: CDI @PersistenceContext not working when DAO/Bean in own Jar (GFv3)

DAO-Jar:
/com/dominikdorn/.../domain/Artist.class
/com/dominikdorn/.../dao/ArtistDao.class
/com/dominikdorn/.../dao/JpaArtistDao.class
/com/dominikdorn/.../domain/Title.class
/com/dominikdorn/.../dao/TitleDao.class
/com/dominikdorn/.../dao/JpaTitleDao.class
/META-INF/persistence.xml
/META-INF/beans.xml

WebApp (War/Exploded):
/index.xhtml
/WEB-INF/web.xml
/WEB-INF/beans.xml
/WEB-INF/lib/dao.jar
/WEB-INF/classes/com/dominikdorn/.../servlets/MySerlvet.class

The Servlet @Injects the DAO (e.g. ArtistDao) which works, however,
the EntityManager in the DAO is not set (annotated with @PersistenceContext)

When I'm copying everything from the DAO-jar to the webapp and remove
the dao-jar from the web-app libs, the entitymanager gets injected as expected.

So, NO ear, NO EJB, just plain CDI with @Inject and the @PersistenceContext.

Does this help?

dominik

Try to put beans.xml under classes/metainf, not under webinf in the
web app,

If this makes any difference, it's definitely a bug.
I can already inject the DAO so CDI is working in the webapp.

I think the problem is, that the method that scans for @PersistenceContext
does not scan nested jars.

I will try your suggestion and see if it works then, but I really doubt that.

Did you check the thread I mentioned?
Try this: add one simple @Stateless (EJB) class and inject
EntityManager there. There is no need to use that session bean, but as
far as I can tell, Glassfish does not start JPA module if there is no
at least one EJB using it. Once JPA is started there should be no
problem with CDI accessing persistence context.

/META-INF/beans.xml seems redundant. It should not make any difference though. It looks like a bug to me. Please check issue tracker to see if this has been already filed or not.

Ok, I tried the @Singleton trick, it still does not work.

I attached the debugger to the classes and noticed that CDI/Weld does not
detect that the class has any @PersistenceContext annotated field.

this=org.jboss.weld.bean-/home/domdorn/work/lyrix.git/webapp/target/lyrix-webapp/-ManagedBean-class
com.dominikdorn.lyrix.dao.Jpa2ArtistDao
ejbInjectionPoints = []
persistenceContextInjectionPoints = []
persistenceUnitInjectionPoints = []
resourceInjectionPoints = []
specializedBean = null
injectableFields = 2
 [0] = an empty hashset
 [1] = an empty hashset

I've attached the java source files + persistence.xml

Thanks for your help.

Hello Dominik,

This issue should be filed in glassfish.dev.java.net (category cdi).
However, I believe there is already an issue for this:
https://glassfish.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=11653
Can you please verify?

Thanks, Roger.

Re: CDI @PersistenceContext not working when DAO/Bean in own Jar (GFv3)

I can't actually say if it is _exact_ the same issue, as no source is provided.
As far as I understand the posters setup, he uses a @Producer Method to
generate/distribute the EntityManager and also has EJB's in his app.

My Problem is solely CDI related, as I'm not using any EJB stuff.
I've just attached the same example as in the jboss tracker to your bug...
Can you take a look at it?

kr,
dominik

were you able to create a persistence configuration?
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4332/create-persistence-resource-1?l=en&n=1&a=view

after the persistence-resource is created what are you displayed with list-persisence-resources?
asadmin>list-persistence-resources terse=false

?

I'm using Glassfish v3.0.1 promoted from 2010-04-29

your command gives me
domdorn webapp $ asadmin list-persistence-resources terse=false
CLI194 Previously supported command: list-persistence-resources is not
supported for this release.

This command was used in the initial CMP support, when a special wrapper
was needed around a datasource.

Re: CDI @PersistenceContext not working when DAO/Bean in own Jar (GFv3)

Ok, I think I found the real problem:

CDI Injection of @PersistenceContext does not work, when using a
Servlet 2.3 web.xml file (even if its empty except for the header) ,
like this one

<!DOCTYPE web-app PUBLIC
        "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN"
        "http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd" >
<web-app>

</web-app>

I have a test case where I can reproduce this bug.

I don't think annotation processing will be happening if you have
web.xml with a version prior to 2.5.

I am facing the same issue. I am using the Servlet 2.3 web.xml.
Have you found the solution for this problem??
